Temple Street Children’s Hospital wins green forum award
Wednesday, 28 September 2011
Temple Street Children’s University Hospital (CUH) emerged as the overall winner of the Dublin Chamber Green Forum inaugural awards at a ceremony held at the offices of ByrneWallace. Six business battled it out at a dragons’ den type event, where they presented their green commercial sustainability strategies to a panel of green dragons including Bobby Kerr, Brian Motherway, chief operations officer at SEAI, David Hourihane, Partner & Head of Green Economy Group, ByrneWallace, Ellen Roche, Director in the Tax & Legal Services practice at PwC; and serial entrepreneur Norman Crowley, Chairman, Crowley Carbon. Gerry Killen, Chairman of the Green Economy Forum, ran proceedings with each company getting 4 minutes to present their credentials.

From a climate of budget cuts, strained resources and a 200 year old building, Temple Street CUH impressed the judges. Their mix of small and large initiatives from reducing food portion sizes and limiting the water flow from taps to larger initiatives such as engaging with the procurement department on considering lifecycle analysis when purchasing capital equipment, tipped the green scales in their favour. The initiatives deployed in Temple Street are capable of being rolled out in other hospitals as well – “We want other hospitals to learn from both our successes and failures in terms of sustainability," said Ryan.
Winners:
1. Temple Street Children's University Hospital.

3. An Post (Special commendation)
The other finalists were PM Group, the Ritz-Carlton in Powerscourt and estate agents Savills Ireland. We would like to thank all our finalists and other entrants for the effort they put into their submissions and presentations on the night.
