Sector

The Irish EGS market comprises companies of all sizes. With the exception of some major players (domestic and subsidiaries of European parent companies), it is dominated by domestic SMEs. We expect this to be a driver for mergers and acquisitions activity in the sector.

The Irish Government has committed substantial funds to the promotion of Green Economy projects. We expect significant public expenditure to flow into the sector in 2009 and beyond. In particular, stimulus for financing green initiatives is projected to come from a number of areas, examples including: (i) the obligation of banks participating in the Bank Recapitalisation Scheme to provide €100m each for investment in environmentally friendly projects; (ii) ESB’s “Strategic Framework to 2020” includes €4bn dedicated for renewable energy projects; and (iii) venture capital activity is also expected to flow into the sector to mirror recent developments in the European and US venture capital industries.
