Green Economy
We believe that the greening of the Irish economy and the development of green enterprise are essential keys for sustainable economic revival in Ireland. The green economy is a growing force - the environmental goods and services (EGS) sector in Ireland today is worth between €4.3bn and €5.2bn annually and is developing rapidly. The European wide target is to reduce GHGs by 20% (based on 1990 levels). Ireland’s targets are a 21% reduction in EU ETS emissions by 2020; a 20% cut in the non-trading "domestic" emissions by 2020 (both based on 2005 levels), and a 16% target for renewable energy penetration by 2020. Working towards these goals presents major opportunities for players in Ireland’s EGS sector and is changing the landscape for every organisation. Environmental targets are acting as a driver for the development of the green economy in Ireland, especially when allied to the Government’s recently stated more aggressive target of 40% of electricity generation from renewable sources from 2020.
