Waste & Water

In addition to renewable energies, waste management and water supply and treatment are the key resource components of the Green Economy. Waste management is the most developed of the green economy sectors in Ireland. Waste management policy is set at EU level and a significant body of legislation has been developed since the adoption of the first Waste Framework Directive in 1977. Both private entities and local authorities are active players in the sector. Water supply and waste water treatment are two vital components of Ireland’s national infrastructure. €3.7 billion was invested in new and upgraded water services infrastructure under NDP 2000-2006; €4.7 billion has been provided under NDP 2007-2013.

Sectoral experience

Working closely with specialists in projects/PPP and construction we provide expert advice to consortia, developers and public bodies involved in the provision of waste and water infrastructure. This area is heavily regulated at EU and national level and we regularly advise clients on the rigorous environmental law regulatory regime governing these projects.  Members of the team have advised on several of the largest water and wastewater projects in Ireland; for example the Cork Municipal Waste Recovery Facility PPP Project, acting for Cork City and County Councils and Northern Ireland acting for the Strategic Investment Board on Project Alpha & Project Omega Water and Waste Water PPP projects.
