Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a positive and practical approach to doing business: it maximises the benefits we can help bring about for our people, our clients and our communities and manages the impact we have on the environment. At ByrneWallace our CSR policy promotes opportunities to meet and exceed the expectations of clients, employees and other stakeholders beyond our normal statutory and business obligations. By taking this approach to CSR, we enhance our most valuable intangible asset – our reputation.

For ByrneWallace, our goal is to ensure the business activities we undertake enhance rather than impede our relationships with clients, suppliers, employees and the community. We aim to combine the provision of high quality legal advice to our clients with a rewarding working environment, an awareness of the wider community and strong long lasting relationships.

ByrneWallace is driven by the belief that how we operate internally reflects how we operate externally; therefore we ensure that our employees are active participants in our CSR which endeavors to build staff morale and cultivate a team spirit. 

ByrneWallace in the Community

For ByrneWallace, CSR extends well beyond just writing a donation cheque to a charitable cause. We are dedicated to being a responsible contributing member of society, seeking to build strong relationships with the local community and act as a good neighbour.

Charitable giving and volunteerism are part of the ByrneWallace culture, and our employees are making a difference through local involvement, sporting endeavors and corporate activities - partnering with community organisations, business and government, schools and workforce development programmes designed to make a difference to peoples' lives. We support our staff volunteerism in a number of ways, through hosting various in-house fundraising events to becoming involved in larger events run by selected charities.

Working placements from St John of God

Young men & women, with learning difficulties or disabilities from St John of God, attend work experience with the Firm for duration of 4 hours over a 6 week period. Their experience incorporates attending court and working with solicitors and support staff in the daily tasks. The participants keep a detailed daily diary, with photographs to document their experience.

Breast Cancer Ireland

Following direct requests from our staff, we held a "Pink Friday" in 2012, in support of breast cancer Ireland. In-house bake sales, quizzes and competitions were held on the day and the events culminated in the staff participating in The Great Pink Run, a 5k run organised by Breast Cancer Ireland.  

Sports & Social Events

For every Sports and Social event the Firm holds, a charity is chosen and any contributions raised are given to the selected charity.  Recent events include: Boat quiz and raffle - Our Lady's Children Hospital in Crumlin, Pancake party -National Children's Hospital in Tallaght.

Christmas Charities

Each Christmas children from St Audeons National School (who were our neighbours in our old offices in High Street) visit us to sing Christmas carols for the staff. In turn they receive a donation to help with their running costs. We also contribute to the Women's Refuge Appeal, donations of food, clothing and all important Santa presents are given to the appeal.

Additional External Events

The Firm encourages and supports all staff in charitable events they participate in, and where possible funds raised by individuals will be matched by the Firm. Recent examples of such events include: The Calcutta Run, Barnardos Full Moon Trek, the Docklands Fun Run, Women's Mini-Marathon, Dublin Marathon, Jack and Jill mobile phone appeal and Niall Mellon Trust.

Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association

In 2014, the partners and staff were proud to support the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association when members of the ByrneWallace Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Team, including our Managing Partner, Catherine Guy, participated in the renowned Ice Bucket Challenge. The CSR Team members included Aoife Clarke, James Roche, Diego Gallagher, Roisin Bergin and Norma Fitzgerald.

Special Olympic Ireland

Over the past 3 years, the firm has supporting SOI in their national volunteer day by donating Staff time to help collect in the local community. Additionally the Firm hosted in-house bake sales to raise extra funds for the charity. We have been fortunate enough to have Special Olympic Athletes come in to share their experiences.

Our Lady's Hospice and Care Services, Harold's Cross & Blackrock Hospice

Each year on their collection day the Firm hosts a Coffee Morning to raise funds. 

ByrneWallace is a proud sponsor of the Hope Foundation which operates over 60 projects, with the majority of the projects geared towards helping street children and their community. HOPE is reaching out to almost 25,000 street children in Kolkata through education alone and hundreds of thousands more through primary healthcare, in partnership with Irish Aid. It begins with the youngest children and the establishment of crèches, something that is very unique in Kolkata, which allows the mothers of children to work and support their family. Following this, coaching centres provide children with social and educational preparation for mainstream schooling and support during their schooling. Vocational training is given to adolescents and working mothers so that they can have a livelihood and counselling plays a huge part in helping those who have been abused while living on the streets and slums.

ByrneWallace and the environment

We are committed to energy efficiency and managing our impact on the environment. Recent initiatives include:

  • The recycling of 95% of our waste.
  • A bin-less office policy across the firm.
  • Waste and food recycling facilities on every floor.
  • ByrneWallace was Ireland’s first law firm to implement an integrated Environmental Management System in accordance with the EMS International Standard 14001 from 2011 to 2012.
