ByrneWallace LLP, in partnership with Biramis Management Partners, hosted a series of webinars featuring a panel of successful business leaders sharing their various strategies, insights and learnings on business exits. 

This unique series, entitled “Business Owners – Unlock your Wealth and Maximise Value on Exit”, was aimed to assist business owners plan for a successful exit, either by Trade Sale exit, Management Buy Out (MBO) or Family Succession, by learning from those who have successfully made that journey.

Episode 1: Planning a successful business sale

Panellists include:

  • Michelle Walshe who sold her family business, M&M Walshe Group, one of Ireland’s largest bacon and sous vide producers, to a leading UK-based private equity firm. This facilitated a successful exit for all of the family members.
  • Ronan Byrne an experienced CEO and commercial leader of multiple companies, who successfully built and exited several businesses across different sectors including Beverly Records ManagementEngage Technologies, and Clearsight Innovations.  Ronan now works in/is involved with a number of life sciences companies spanning across digital health, devices, pharma and drug delivery.
  • Valerie Moran who made it to the Sunday Times Rich List when she exited giant technology company Pre-paid Financial Services (PFS) which she set up with her husband Noel Moran. They currently run eCOMM, a payment gateway business. 
  • Stirling Austin who exited NIM Europe Management, an Interim Management company. The business was sold to a company in Paris which was looking to leverage its growth. It is now one of France’s leading interim management companies. Stirling now runs Pixel Executive, a multi-lingual website agency based in Manchester.

Episode 2: "Selling your business to your Management Team – Why a Management Buy Out?"

Panellists include:

  • Neil McGowan has over 12 years investment banking and private equity experience and is a Partner and Co-Head of Investments in MML Growth Capital Partners Ireland, a private equity fund dedicated to backing managers of small and medium-sized private businesses backed by AIB, Enterprise Ireland and a number of international institutional investors.
  • Danny Hughes is the Group CEO of Fastway Couriers Ireland, a company which specialises in ecommerce fashion and clothing delivery. The company was originally founded as a franchise in Ireland and expanded rapidly, driven by the continued growth of shopping online by Irish consumers. The founders exited the business in 2017 via a Management Buy Out backed by MML Growth Capital Partners Ireland.  
  • Matthew Hirst is the CEO of leading energy technology provider ESG with over 500 staff and operations in North America, Japan and the UK. Matt was the mastermind and leader behind the 2014 Management Buyout of Utiligroup, backed by private equity firm NorthEdge Capital. 
  • Dean Benson is the founder and CEO of Visualsoft, a full service eCommerce and digital marketing agency headquartered in Stockton-on-Tees.

Episode 3: “Legacy Exits - Family Business Succession”

Panellists include:

  • Bevin Mahon, Co-owner & Managing Director of Dental Tech Group, a multi-award winning second generation company and the largest provider of portable dental and denture services in Ireland. Bevin joined the family business in 2001, taking over the business from her parents. A passionate supporter of female entrepreneurship, she was a finalist in the Irish Women’s Awards and winner of the Graham Norton Gin Inspiring Women Awards for Healthcare Pioneer (2019). Bevin also participated in the EY Winning Women European group and was a nominee for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Ireland 2020.
  • Hannah Barlow, Joint MD of Dunsters Farm, one half of a brother/sister team at Dunsters Farm, a third generation family-run foodservice business. Hannah joined the family business in 2014 and, with her brother, has successfully transitioned the business from second to third generation, introducing new technology and restructuring the team.
  • Matt Carr, Co-owner and Director of Carr’s Pasties, a third generation family business. Matt joined in 2013, having previously worked in construction and technology. Since taking over the business with his brothers, the business has experienced significant growth and expansion.   
  • Andrew McLaughlin, Managing Director of MIS Computer Services Group, who took over his father’s software house, MIS Group, in 2018, alongside twin brother, Chris.  A qualified accountant, Andrew leads on finance and strategy across the group, and has implemented numerous strategic and operational transformations.
